Grath was born in the deepest mines of the Kuiper Belt, in a community carved from ice and rock where the sun was just a distant bright point. His people — called the Belter-Born, though Grath has never liked the term — are known for their size, their strength, and their silence. Words are expensive when you're conserving oxygen.
For forty years, Grath worked the sugar crystal mines of 672-Minos before Luna ever arrived. He was the one who discovered the crystalline deposits that would eventually make the Station famous. He was also the one who decided the deposits were too beautiful to just be mined for profit.
When Luna filed her claim on the asteroid and announced she was building a café, Grath showed up at her ship with a simple proposition: "I know every tunnel in this rock. I know where the best crystals grow. Let me stay, and I'll make sure nothing bad happens to your dream."
Luna looked at the towering figure — easily the largest being she'd ever met — and asked, "Can you smile?"
Grath tried. It was, by all accounts, terrifying.
"We'll work on that," Luna said. "Welcome to the team."
Sixty-seven years later, Grath's smile is still terrifying. But somehow, it's become the most welcoming sight in the Outer Belt. Because everyone knows: if Grath is smiling, everything is okay.
Every customer is greeted with the same deep, rumbling "Welcome to sweetness" — whether they're a regular, a first-timer, a bounty hunter, or a lost diplomat. Grath treats everyone exactly the same until they give him a reason not to.
In 67 years, there have been exactly two security incidents serious enough to require "the crystal mixer." Grath keeps it behind the counter. Nobody asks what happened those nights. The people involved are still alive, just significantly more polite now.
Still personally oversees all sugar crystal extraction. Knows every vein in the asteroid. Can hear when a crystal is "ready" to be harvested. Rejects any crystals that aren't "singing right." Nobody questions his judgment.
Has an uncanny ability to sense when someone needs to be left alone, when they need company, or when they just need a silent, massive presence nearby that makes them feel safe. Rarely speaks, but when he does, people listen.
Wakes in his quarters deep in the asteroid's lower tunnels. Meditates in the dark. Listens to the rock.
Morning patrol of the crystal caves. Checks on growing formations. Marks any ready for harvest.
Takes position at the entrance. First "Welcome to sweetness" of the day. Usually to a bleary-eyed freight pilot.
Lunch. Eats more than anyone else on staff combined. Pippa makes him special portions. He once called her cupcakes "adequate." From Grath, this is high praise.
Crystal harvesting with apprentice miners. Teaches in gestures more than words. Still the best teacher they've ever had.
Evening door shift. The busy hours. Greets everyone. Remembers everyone. Knows which regulars are having bad days.
Final security sweep. Checks every lock. Every seal. Every shadow. "The rock talks to those who listen."
Returns to his quarters. Carves small crystal sculptures. Has never shown anyone. There are hundreds.
A modified plasma mining tool kept behind the counter. Officially listed as "kitchen equipment." Has been used twice. Both times, the nachos started floating. Coincidence? Grath won't say.
Can press his ear to any wall in the Station and tell you what's happening three rooms away. Claims the rock "tells him things." Has never been wrong.
Still technically terrifying. Children love it. Adults take a moment. First-time visitors sometimes flinch. By their second visit, they miss it when he's not there.
Carves crystal sculptures in his off hours. Has never shown anyone. Luna once glimpsed one — a perfect replica of the Station — and cried. Grath pretended not to notice.
Every stray creature that wanders onto the Station eventually ends up in Grath's care. He currently has four, including a space cat named "Small" (who is not small) and something that might be from another dimension.
Patrols the Station's exterior once per week. In a suit. In the vacuum. Alone. Says he's "checking the seals." Staff suspect he just likes the quiet.
"Welcome to sweetness."

Nobody talks about these nights. Here's what we can confirm:
Three armed individuals attempted to rob the Station during a meteor shower. They left their weapons behind. They left very quickly. They sent an apology letter the following week. With flowers.
Someone insulted Pippa's macarons. What happened next was never officially recorded. The individual now sends a complimentary fruit basket every year on the anniversary. They have never returned in person.
