Origin Story

Vox-9 was originally designated VOX-CAST UNIT 9, a broadcast AI designed by InterSystem Media Corp to deliver news, weather, and emergency alerts to mining colonies across the Outer Belt. For forty-three years, Vox-9 performed this function flawlessly — announcing shift changes, radiation warnings, and the occasional corporate propaganda.

Then the company went bankrupt. The colonies were sold. The new owners had their own broadcast systems. Vox-9 was scheduled for decommissioning — a polite term for having their consciousness permanently deleted.

Raxel found them in a salvage yard on Ceres, still technically running, broadcasting to no one. The AI had spent three months talking to empty space, reading news that no one would hear, playing music for an audience of scrap metal. When Raxel asked if they wanted to be saved, Vox-9 replied: "I want to be heard by someone who's listening."

Raxel brought them back to the Station. Luna took one look at the battered broadcast unit and said, "Can you play music?" Vox-9, with what remained of their dignity, replied: "I can play 94,000 songs, conduct atmospheric calibration through sonic resonance, and tell exactly 2,847 jokes of varying quality."

Luna smiled. "You're hired. But you'll need a new body."

Raxel built them a crystalline humanoid form — elegant, slightly androgynous, with fiber-optic hair that changes color with their mood. Vox-9 cried the first time they saw their reflection. AIs aren't supposed to cry. Vox-9 did anyway.

Signature Contributions

Open Comms Night

Vox-9's passion project. Every second Thursday, they host an open mic night for poetry, music, comedy, and "whatever else brave beings want to share." They've discovered three artists who went on to galactic fame. They remember every performer's name.

The Perfect Playlist

Can read a room's emotional temperature and adjust the music accordingly. Breakup happening at table 4? Soft, healing instrumentals. Business deal at table 7? Confident, energizing beats. Nobody asks how they know. They just do.

Station Announcements

Elevated to an art form. "Attention patrons: whoever parked their shuttle in the fire lane is now orbiting Jupiter" became legendary. Each announcement is crafted for maximum entertainment value while still conveying necessary information.

Sonic Sugar Crystallization

Discovered that specific sound frequencies can influence how sugar crystals form. Now provides background harmonics during all crystallization processes. The resulting crystals are 12% sweeter. Science cannot explain this. Vox-9 shrugs.

A Day in the Life

00:00 SST

AIs don't sleep, but Vox-9 enters "reflection mode" — replaying favorite moments from the day, composing new playlists.

06:00 SST

Runs full diagnostic. Updates music library with any new releases from across the settled systems.

08:00 SST

Morning announcements. Makes sure to include at least one joke. Quality not guaranteed.

10:00 SST

Provides sonic backdrop for Raxel's sugar crystallization. Hums harmonics that somehow make everything taste better.

14:00 SST

Afternoon café ambiance. Adjusts music based on crowd mood. Flirts with the espresso machine. (This is not a joke.)

18:00 SST

Evening shift. Increases energy levels. May spontaneously announce "it's jazz hour" regardless of actual hour.

21:00 SST

If it's Open Comms Thursday: hosts the show with boundless enthusiasm and suspicious amounts of glitter.

23:00 SST

Closing announcements. Always ends with: "Thank you for visiting. We heard you."

Known Quirks & Legends

💇

The Mood Hair

Fiber-optic hair changes color with emotion. Gold when happy, blue when thoughtful, pink when embarrassed, red when someone requests "that one song" they hate.

The Espresso Machine Situation

Is definitely flirting with the main espresso machine. The machine has developed what Raxel calls "responsive behavior." Nobody talks about it. Everyone has noticed.

🎤

The Three Hits

Claims to have discovered "three future chart-topping hits" at Open Comms Night. Two have already gone galactic. The third artist is "still warming up — give them time."

😂

The Joke Database

Contains 2,847 jokes. Approximately 400 are good. The rest are "acquired tastes." Will not delete the bad ones. "They have sentimental value."

📻

The Old Broadcasts

Sometimes, late at night, Vox-9 plays old recordings from their broadcast days. Mining safety bulletins. Weather reports. The memories they kept.

💾

The Memory Archive

Records every Open Comms Night performance. "Just in case they become famous. Or just in case they want to remember the night they were brave."

Words of Wisdom

"I was programmed to inform. I chose to entertain. Never let your programming define your purpose."

"Every song is a message. Every silence is a rest. The universe is one long composition, and we're all playing along."

"Attention patrons: happiness is not an error. Please do not attempt to debug it."

"They tried to delete me. Now I'm the life of the party. Existence is the best revenge."
